What Kind of Heart Are You Showing in Your Advertising Techniques?

According to a Yale psychology department study, there are ten words you should be using in your advertising techniques to get the most powerful responses:

New, Save, Safety, Proven, Love, Discover, Guarantee, Health, Results, and You (which was listed as the most powerful above all!)

As a marketer, knowing these types of things always interests me, but as one who’s interested in the ‘heart’ of business, I’m just fascinated as the feelings behind why these words are so powerful in advertising.

It can be all too easy for any marketer to fall into the trap of making it ‘about me’. I think a lot of that is simply ingrained in us from the older days of advertising – the lack mentality and desperation to say ‘Look at me! Look at me!’ where the one who shows the most glitter gets ahead.

It can be very difficult to trust your marketing on the strength of who you are and the foundation of quality that you provide when you’re living on the fear that someone else may get ahead!

But think about it – if you can provide something unique and novel, your product or service is going to shout ‘NEW’ and ‘DISCOVER’ louder than any of your copy will. If you can offer testimonials and give your honest word to stand behind your product or service, ‘PROVEN’, ‘RESULTS’, ‘SAFETY’ and ‘GUARANTEE’ are spoken out for you.

If your true desire is to make honest money with something you know your audience can afford and pay happily, they’re going to know that they’re SAVING, and while not everything has to do with HEALTH, any product or service you create that contributes to overall balance is going to have an affect there too.

LOVE, of course, can literally show through everything you do – and the more you love what you’re doing and who you’re doing it for, the greater the power of that word will pervade throughout every aspect of your business.

And YOU, of course – your client or customer – they’ll know right away if it’s all about them or not as soon as they stumble across your marketing efforts!

Does this mean you should never use these words in your copy or advertising techniques, simply letting your product or service speak for itself? Continue Reading

How Do You Become an Expert in Your Niche Market?I read an interesting book called “Blink”1 by Malcolm Gladwell, who was recently called one of the most influential thinkers of our time.

He wrote about “Thin Slicing”, or the ability to get a fast amount of information (in the blink of an eye) when you’ve immersed yourself in its study.

He illustrated this point with a story from the Getty Museum in California. They bought a marble statue for 10 million dollars and had a geologist test the surface of it to make sure it was authentic. After 2 days, the geologist determined that it was.

Then the Museum decided to brag about it.

Shortly thereafter, they were showing the sculpture to Italian Art Historian, Frederico Zeri, who served on the Getty’s board of Trustees, and Evelyn Harrison, one of the world’s foremost experts on Greek Sculpture.

When Zeri was taken down to the museums restoration studio to see the korus, he found himself staring at the sculpture’s fingernails.  They seemed somehow wrong to him, but it was in a way that he couldn’t immediately articulate.

When it was Evelyn’s turn, the curator took her down to the basement, swished the cloth off the top of it and beamed, “Well it isn’t ours yet, but in a couple of weeks it will be.”

To his shock, Evelyn turned to him and said, “I’m sorry”.

She had no idea why she said that, she just had a feeling, a hunch.  You see, these two individuals had spent most of their life pouring over original sculpture and art and had become experts.

Something got recorded in their brain that they were unable to explain.  They absorbed a complicated amount of clues along the way, and it turned into instinct.

This same thing happens to me with marketing, and probably to you within your own expertise.

When these experts looked at the sculpture, right away, in the “blink” of an eye, they instinctively knew it was a fake, although they couldn’t logically explain to the Curator why they had come to that conclusion.

This area of your brain is not connected to your speech.  In 2 seconds, they knew what eventually took the museum 14 months to confirm.

Successful people in business or even in stock investing can often get unexplainable feelings or indications that something is not right or when something is great and they should move on it quickly.

I bet you have your own unique expertise and instincts based on your life experience, hands-on experience and training, and that you could teach that valuable info to another human being who could really use your help and guidance.

What Is a Podcast?

You know, it wasn’t too long ago that I was going around thinking, “What is a podcast, anyway?” – but from all the buzz I was hearing, I knew it was something I really should be doing in my own marketing strategy!

So, when I did decide to get started, I went and found the best of the best to get me on the road to creating my podcast – his name is Scott Paton – the author of Podcasting Unleashed and serious podcasting expert.

Scott showed me that Podcasting is simply a way to distribute audio and video shows via the Internet that let you subscribe to a number of files, also known as “feeds”, and then listen to or watch the program at the time of your choosing.

So, rather than having to go to a web site to see if there is a new MP3 there for you to listen to or receive it via email, which can be blocked by Spam filters, subscribers use a “feed” to deliver the MP3 file directly to them.

Podcasting, much like Blogging did for news and editorials, lets anyone have their own “Radio or TV show”.

While you have always been able to download MP3 files and listen to them on your computer, Podcasting automates a lot of the process. Now an RSS Feed delivers the MP3 file to your computer (when you want), then your computer downloads the MP3 program to your iPod (and that’s where the name came from).

But, you don’t even need an iPod for it to work, as most MP3 player have the software to automate the process. Many people simply listen to the recording on their computer, or even burn it to a CD.

Great!

What I get out of that is that podcasting is simply another way for me to connect at a heart to heart, voice to voice, face to face level with my community (and future members of my community!) – which is always something I love – especially when it turns out to be a lot less ‘technical’ than I thought it would be!

I’m doing something out of character…

Im doing something out of character...Ok, I have to be quick as I writing to you as I am doing something a little out of character (ok a lot) and being sneaky here (but its for a good cause – so  conscious back off ), sorry about that – my karma was berating me for a second there.

Ok here goes, the fact is that my social media partner in Get it Done Today (you know the sold out 2 months ago  ‘we do it for you” social media buzz package) has just fried her computer.

Don’t worry she’s get it fixed (that’s what husbands are for), but right now she’s really distracted ….heh..heh…so after I offered her useless help (as a good partner does and really if it requires something more than putting polysporin and a band-aid on it, I’m lost).

So back to you – I thought of a brilliant  IDEA as I let out my evil laugh to get you hooked up social media buzz and at practically cost!  I thought  – “hey while she’s distracted I could easily email my list and offer 5 people the same deal we already SOLD OUT on.”  Ha Ha!

The reason I wanted to do this is because very soon we’re unveiling a NEW price  on this package – and you guessed it, its higher.

However, don’t fret it’s STILL LOWER than any other company- so we’re still massively competitive and what we offer is NOT OFFERED anywhere else – we are truly overstuffing our services for you- we give you waaaaaay more than anyone else is and believe us we know as we can read through web copy  hype and actually figure out what they’re offering and what they offer is a way bigger profit margin and minimal work for you.  Maybe that makes them better “business men” than us- but we take the approach that we want to create your stuff as if it was our own.  So if we need to stay up til 2am to get something done right, we will.  Maybe on paper that doesn’t make us as good of business people as we’re doing that while they’re out drinking with their friends telling them how much money they just made off of you- but that’s the way we roll.

And really when it comes to social media buzz just getting up a few webpages is not going to do anything for you- it’s a waste of money, you need hidden seo techniques on top, blogging techniques, hidden on the page (but legal)  strategies that make a HUGE difference from a massively profitable blog or twitter page and a pretty one.

But I’m hoping Marney will go for the $100 flowers and not the $700 laptop (pick the flowers, pick the flowers, pick the flowers) – we’ll see – I’ll keep you posted!  I’m banking on the fact that I will live through this as Marney has a wicked sense of humor and I’m totally taking advantage of her giving nature (really she’ll probably do your wash for you if you asked her). Uhhh so sweet.

I just read a great post from Marc Goldman on the importance of having a great affiliate system set-up for your Joint Venture partners.

I know there are a lot of entrepreneurs out there who really don’t like having to pay attention to these ‘technical’ details in their online advertising techniques and partnerships – I think sometimes we all kind of just hope that the IT fairy will come down and take care of it all for us – or that if problems arise, they’ll just go away!

Looking For Ways to do Really Targeted Marketing?

I was recently on a Private JV Club student call, and we were brainstorming about the idea:  Who is your Best Client or Customer?

This is an exercise that I give to entrepreneurs to be able to profile their best client/customer and use it as a way to amp up their targeted marketing.

Normally I would have them do this by looking at their past clients and “profiling” just like on CSI Crime Show, profiling who is their best client, the ones who spend the most amount of money and are the least trouble to deal with (plus more detail on how to duplicate them and market to them).  But you get the idea and you don’t guess – you use your sales reports to actually find out.

But on this consulting call, one of the people that was creating this profile of their best client/customer didn’t actually have a mailing list or past customer base yet, so we started coming up with other ideas of how to best figure out how to do targeted marketing for her business.
